Ponyboy began the long walk home in a stupor. On the way a twenty-something year old man appeared and gave him a ride but Ponyboy was bleeding so the man got worried and asked him where he was going and Ponyboy just said please take him home. When he arrived Steve was stretched out on the couch, his shirt unbuttoned and his side bandaged. Soda had a wide cut on her lip and a bruise on her cheek. Darry had a band-aid on his forehead and a black eye. One side of Two-Bits' face was bandaged; for he had four stitches in his cheek and seven in his hand, where his knuckles had been split open. They were resting, reading the newspaper and smoking. There was a silence between them as they did not realize how bad Johnny was. Dally ran out of the house. Then the phone rang, it was Dally calling from a pay phone, because he had robbed a grocery store. The police were chasing him and eventually killed him violently.
Ponyboy fainted from being kicked in the head when he had the fight. This led to a concussion. The brothers were always looking out for him. Darry said that Johnny had left her a copy of the book "Gone with the Wind"
